D6 Athlete of the Week: Angelina Hunt, University High School

D6 Athlete of the Week: Angelina Hunt, University High School

"....She is always willing to listen to any struggles that her other teammates are going through and strives to live by example.  In practice, she will continuously be performing at 110% even when the rest of the team is exhausted and may want to take the easy route..."

"Angelina came to mind when asking to nominate one of my students for Athlete of the Week because I can always depend on her to be an exceptional teammate, hard-working athlete who always strives to improve her technique, and a great student. Angie creates such a welcoming and positive environment at all practices and team bonding events. She is always willing to listen to any struggles that her other teammates are going through and strives to live by example. In practice, she will continuously be performing at 110% even when the rest of the team is exhausted and may want to take the easy route. She makes everyone better, by just being herself! She gives her heart to our sport and is one of the most improved students I've had the pleasure to work with. After not making the team her freshman year, she came back her sophomore year having worked up to the level that was required and has been on an upward trajectory since then! As a senior, she has seen so much success because of her hard work and dedication. I can't wait to see what Angie chooses to dedicate herself to next year because I'm sure she will make a great impact!" - Gina Shepherd, Poms Coach

What are your goals for this season?

"My goals for the rest of the season is to continue enjoying dance with my team for the last 2 months I have with these girls."

Who are your role models in your sport or life, and how have they influenced you?

"My coach Gina has been there for every step of my journey with coming back and joining dance, making her one of my biggest role models. I would also say the seniors from my sophomore year on the team were huge role models as they helped me get a better understanding of the support and supported me in everything. I am happy to say that I have even more role models in my life, and the support system I have is truly amazing."

How do you manage the balance between academics and athletics? What strategies have been most effective for you?

"I take it day-by-day and focus hard in class so there's no outside work. I like to also separate the two. It's like having two different mentalities in both dance and school."

How do you handle pressure and maintain mental resilience during high-stakes competition?

"As the spirit leader, I give pep talks before we perform and competitions, I like to make jokes and inspire my team which helps calm the nerves as well as feeling motivated to push through."

What are your career or college plans after you graduate high school?

"I plan to attend UNC to major in Nutritional Science. I also plan to join the UNC Sugar Bears dance team."

What advice do you have for younger athletes who want to join your sport?

"Know your 'why', take classes to get a base knowledge on dance, and be confident in yourself."

Do you have any funny pre-game rituals or superstitions that you stick to?

"We have a chant before every performance. We also don't wear red or silver on State week!"

If you were to participate in a talent show unrelated to your sport, what would your act be?

"I would either do a magic trick or a comedy split."
